What happens when we leave something behind, untended and uncared for? There are places throughout our urban environments slowly falling apart because they no longer serve a purpose. This piece — like many of my works — explores these spaces as a metaphor for my own experience.

The peeling paint, exposed concrete, rust and accumulated grime reflect the layers of trauma we carry. Some of the marks left on us make life more difficult; others give us perspectives we might never otherwise have had. Like an abandoned surface, we carry evidence of what has happened to us — altered by it, but not necessarily defined by it.
