Obsolescence, 2026

Oil & Cold Wax on Board  |  50 x 50 cm  |  Unframed

I found the inspiration for this piece in an old drain cover, its original function almost forgotten beneath layers of rust, corrosion and faded green paint. I was fascinated by the transformation of something once entirely functional into something unexpectedly beautiful. The slow deterioration of its surface speaks to the inevitability of change and the impermanence of the things we create. But there's a more personal idea here too. We live in a world that places enormous value on productivity and usefulness, where becoming obsolete is something to fear. This work challenges that notion, exploring how the loss of one purpose can reveal something entirely new.
